Discovery: Ian Whitcomb—This Sporting Life
There was no January 1st survey. With the two-week gap, then, we have more
debuts than usual and more big jumps and falls—notably, the Righteous Brothers
leaping from 35 to number one and Shirley Ellis debuting at number 14.
Israeli pop singer Esther Ofarim’s “Dirty Old Town” is the
lone non-BB hit debuting this week; it will reach number 15 here. Dusty Springfield’s “Guess Who?” will peak
next week at number 23, while in Billboard it only got to number 109. The other debuts all made the Hot 100;
differences worth mentioning are those of Brenda Lee’s “The Crying Game” (87
BB/28 KJR), “Lemon Tree” by Trini Lopez (20/6), "This Sporting Life" by Englishman-in-Seattle Ian Whitcomb (100/11), and “Shake” by Sam Cooke
(7/46). “Shake” will only appear here
this week--next week KJR stops playing it and switches to its b-side, “A Change
is Gonna Come.” Sonny and Cher’s “Baby
Don’t Go” will reach number 11 here; it peaked at number 8 in Billboard, but
not until several months later, entering the Hot 100 in August 1965, after they
hit it big with “I Got You Babe.”
