Discoveries: Beach Boys—Help Me, Rhonda; O’Jays—Lipstick Traces

Impressive jump from 40 to 10 for Gary Lewis & the Playboys.

In its final week on the survey, “Do You Wanna Dance?” is dropped from the Beach Boys’ listing and “Please Let Me Wonder” appears by itself.

Six months after “Careless Hands,” Jerry Wallace shows up on the survey with another non-BB record, “Time.”  The other debuts were all Hot 100 hits, though Trini Lopez’s “Sad Tomorrows” was just barely; it got to number 94 there, while here it will drop off next week and then re-appear at its peak position of number 29.

Chubby Checker seemingly needed to get in on any new dance fad, no matter how goofy.  His version of Freddie & the Dreamers’ “Do the Freddie” debuts here four weeks ahead of the original; at Billboard it debuted this same week, three weeks ahead of the Dreamers’ version.  Peaks: Chubby 40 BB/11 KJR, Freddie 18 BB/7 KJR.
