Discovery: Freddie & the Dreamers—I Understand; Glen Campbell--Tomorrow Never Comes

Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” jumps from 33 to 5.

It’s a week for turning records over.  The Lancers’ “Hushabye” replaces “The Warmth of the Sun;” the order of the two songs on the Trini Lopez record is reversed;  as mentioned previously, Johnny Rivers’ “Cupid” is joined by its b-side “Midnight Special;” and Roy Orbison’s “Goodnight” drops off as its b-side “Only With You” enters, though for some reason it is listed as a debut rather than as a continuation of the other side.  Neither “Hushabye” and “Only With You” made Billboard—“Only With You” will peak at number 16 here, while “Hushabye” will get no higher than its 42 this week (in fact, that record will be at number 42 four straight weeks—one as “The Warmth of the Sun,” one as “Hushabye,” and two as “Hushabye”/”The Warmth of the Sun”).

The other debuts this week were all Billboard hits, and most will conform pretty closely here with how they did there.  The most significant difference is for pre-stardom Glen Campbell and his "Tomorrow Never Comes," which Bubbled Under at number 118 but will get to number 20 here.  Also worth mentioning, perhaps, is Freddie & the Dreamers’ “I Understand” (36 BB/16 KJR).

If I'm reading my notes correctly, this week's survey listed "The Witch" at number 21 and omitted "Psycho."  However, in next week's survey "The Witch" has dropped off and "Psycho" is at number 6, with number 21 showing as its position for the previous week.  So here I'm listing them both there this week.
