Discovery: Dickey Lee—Laurie (Strange Things Happen)

For the second straight week, the Discovery has the name “Laurie” in the title.  Also, this is the final Discovery listed on the survey.  Despite being the Discovery, though, "Laurie" will only get to number 37 here.  It got to number 14 at Billboard.

All the debuts made Billboard, but two only Bubbled Under.  This is the third time I’ve talked about Nino and April doing better at KJR than BB; “Swing Me” was a number 127 Billboard “hit” that will get to number 25 here (and is the third song we have encountered that I have no copy of).  And lounge singer Damita Jo’s “Tomorrow Night” was number 124 at BB, while here it will be number 48 next week and then drop off.  “Now That You’ve Gone” by Connie Stevens was a number 65 BB hit that will make it to number 33 here.

Sonics--The Hustler

Discovery: Frankie Fanelli—Laurie, Don’t Worry

The Beach Boys make a healthy leap to number 4.  Both sides of the Beatles’ new single debut, separately, with the b-side “Yes it is” coming in higher than the a-side, “Ticket to Ride.”  Starting next week they will be combined as one listing.  In Billboard, they reached number 46 and number one; here the combined listing will reach number one as well.

Two of the debuts did not make BB at all.  The Sonics’ “The Hustler” will not do as well as their first two local hits, stopping at number 42 in two weeks, while nightclub singer Frankie Fanelli’s “Laurie, Don’t Worry” will peak next week at number 24.  “Peanuts,” a polka instrumental by Texas Latino group the Sunglows (AKA Sunny & the Sunliners), was a number 64 Billboard hit that will peak at number 25 here.
