Beatles--I Should Have Known Better

One non-Billboard debut this week, and it’s the Beatles, with “Ask Me Why.”  Despite all the Beatles singles Capitol Records was putting out, it still wasn’t enough for KJR (and some other stations).  “Ask Me Why” had been the b-side of “Please Please Me” on its original release in 1963, appearing on Vee-Jay records in the US after Capitol declined to release it here.  So KJR was either playing it from that single, or from the Vee-Jay LP “Introducing…The Beatles.”

The Beach Boys’ “Wendy” reached number 44 in Billboard despite not actually being a single—it was from a four-song 7” EP called “4-By the Beach Boys.”  Here at KJR, though, it will get to number two in a few weeks.  “Teen Beat ‘65” by drummer Sandy Nelson, an update of his 1959 top ten hit “Teen Beat,” was also a number 44 BB hit and will also reach the top ten here, reaching number 6 in two weeks.

My notes show no Discovery this week.

Jan & Dean and Sonny Knight make big jumps.
