My notes don’t show a Discovery for this week.
A big shakeup in the top ten this week, as songs jump up
from 13, 19, 27 and 39, plus a debut at number 10. “Boys” by the Beatles was a track from their
first British album, “Please Please Me,” which at this point had appeared in
the US only as a track from the album “Introducing…The Beatles.” Last week’s survey was down to just one
Beatles song, “Ask Me Why,” which drops off this week, so again it seems as
though KJR was desperate for more Beatles.
“Boys” would eventually appear on a US single, in 1965, and at that
point Bubble Under in Billboard at number 102.
But here at KJR, and here in 1964, it will reach number one.
All the other debuts this week were Hot 100 hits, with the
biggest differential being for Chuck Berry’s “Little Marie,” a number 54 BB hit
that will get to number 18 next week.
Thank you for posting these lists. They bring back a lot of memories. I won the 45's from this week. The PI published the lists every Friday I believe. You could send in your name and address to win and I did! I was in 6th grade at the time and thought I had died and gone to heaven. Still have them too.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome--thanks for reading them! Yes, they were in the P-I on Fridays from 1964 to 1974. I remember seeing the info on the contest next to the survey--very cool that you won.
