Discovery: Johnny Rivers—Mountain of Love

“Leader of the Pack” shoots up from number 24 to number one, while “Dancing in the Street” debuts at number 13.

The only debut this week that was not a Hot 100 hit was “I’ve Got Better Things to Do” by the Accents (“Featuring Sandi,” as it says on the record label), a group from San Diego.  This didn’t even Bubble Under in Billboard, while it will reach number 28 here in a couple weeks.  The others were all comparably popular in Seattle versus nationally, with the most noteworthy difference being Brenda Lee’s “Is it True?”, a number 17 BB hit that will reach number two here.  Brenda was one of a large number of artist who in 1964 suddenly seemed rather old-fashioned, but rather than go down without a fight she went to England and made this very contemporary-sounding record, with Jimmy Page on guitar.  Then she went back to seeming old-fashioned…
