Discovery: Johnny Mathis—Listen Lonely Girl

Three non-BB debuts this week.  The Everly Brothers’ “Torture,” which will get no higher than its number 33 this week, was the b-side of “Gone Gone Gone,” a number 31 hit at Billboard that KJR opted not to play.  I assume that the Young Men were from Seattle, since they recorded for Seattle’s Bolo Records and they recorded songs about University of Washington football players.  “(Junior’s) Backfield Beat” (to the tune of “Big Boy Pete,” a 1960 hit by the Olympics), was about Husky running back Junior Coffey, who later played four seasons in the NFL.  In December 1963 the Young Men had hit number one at KJR with “Charlie Browning” (to the tune of the Coasters’ “Charlie Brown”), about another Husky running back.  Charlie Browning had a less significant NFL career than Junior Coffey, getting into just one game, for the Jets, but he beat him at KJR as “(Junior’s) Backfield Beat” peaks at number 43 here next week.  “Forbidden” by Bob Moline is a melodramatic pop record that reminds me of “Suspicion” by Terry Stafford, and would be recorded by Stafford in 1966--it peaks here next week at number 21.  Bob Moline later had success writing and singing Christian music and songs for Disney theme parks.

Other debuts that did better in Seattle than nationally: “Why (Doncha Be My Girl)” (92BB/16KJR), “That’s What Love is Made of” (35/9), and “Baby Baby All the Time” (83/14).
