Discovery: Gladys Knight & the Pips—Either Way I Lose

Two non-BB debuts this week: Brian Hyland, pretty much out of favor after his string of early-60s hits, will get to number 36 here in two weeks with “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back,” and Jerry Wallace, best known for his 1959 pop hit “Primrose Lane” and a string of country hits from 1965-80, will reach number 17 with “Careless Hands.”

This week’s Discovery, “Either Way I Lose” by Gladys Knight & the Pips, will make it to number 25 here in two weeks, but was only a number 119 hit at Billboard.  Also worth mentioning—Bobby Bare’s “Four Strong Winds” (60 BB/18 KJR), “Big Man in Town” by the Four Seasons (20/5), and “Run, Run, Run” by the Gestures, from Minnesota (44/3).

At number 31, the b-side of the Elvis record has been added to the survey and both sides are listed together this week.  Next week, “Ask Me” will be dropped and “Ain’t That Loving You Baby” will be the only side listed for the record’s final weeks in the survey.  At number 46, Andy Williams’ “On the Street Where You Live” has been replaced with its b-side, “Almost There.”
