Granny & Clyde--Whale Fever '65

Bob Dylan jumps to number two in just his second week on the survey.

“Salt Lake City” and “Girl Don’t Tell Me” were tracks from the Beach Boys’ album Summer Days (And Summer Nights) that KJR opted to give airplay to; since they were not on a single they by definition did not make the Billboard singles chart (though “Girl Don’t Tell Me” would later be the b-side of the “Barbara Ann” single).  Here the pair of tracks will reach number 22.  The Guilloteens were a Memphis garage band that never made Billboard—the jangly “I Don’t Believe” did get airplay in some cities, mostly in the west, and will get to number 36 at KJR.  Della Rae was a somewhat Brenda Lee-ish singer who also never made it into the Billboard charts, and “Rain on You” will stay at number 49 here next week and then drop off the survey.  I have never heard “Whale Fever ‘65” and I’m not even sure if it ever even appeared on a record; Granny Peters and Clyde were characters on Pat O’Day’s afternoon show on KJR.  The song is only on the survey this week.

The other debuts this week were all Hot 100 hits, though the Freddie & the Dreamers one is the only one that will do about as well here as nationally.  On the plus side, “I Live For the Sun” by Beach Boys sound-alikes the Sunrays  was a number 51 BB hit that will get to number 6 here, and “(My Girl) Sloopy” by Toronto group Little Caesar & the Consuls, a Canadian hit, was number 50 in Billboard and will climb all the way to number one here.  On the other hand, the Ramsey Lewis Trio’s “The ‘In’ Crowd” was a number 5 BB hit which will only get to number 28 here, and the Dave Clark Five’s “I Like it Like That” will only make it to number 33 here versus number 7 in Billboard.

  1. Whale Fever '65 was not released on a record. It was recorded by Pat O'Day and Lan Roberts and got some airplay on KJR. It was to the tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon" and started out "Namu, the killer whale..."
