Eight debuts, four of them non-BB, two of the others also
significantly bigger here than there.
The exceptions are the Four Tops (1 BB/2 KJR) and the Bachelors (15/25).
Teen actor Eddie Hodges (whom I saw on an episode of Bonanza
last night) got to number 44 in Billboard with his version of “New Orleans,”
which will reach number 7 here. And
Shirley Ellis’ latest novelty song, “The Puzzle Song,” will peak here next week
at number 27, but only made it to number 78 at Billboard.
The four non-BB debuts will all peak here at between number
28 and number 40. Ray Stevens, at this
point in the midst of a three-year gap between Hot 100 hits, will remain on the
survey for five more weeks with “Old English Surfer,” but this week’s number 28
position will be its highest. “Do the
Wretch” by the Dropouts is only on the survey for this week; I not only have no
copy of it but I know absolutely nothing about it or the group. Gayle (sometimes spelled Gail) Harris was a local
teenage singer who had been a featured vocalist with the Wailers; her “Ain’t
Gonna Let it Get Me Down” will peak at number 40 next week. And Sir Raleigh & the Cupons are back
with their second KJR hit; “Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Another Day” was already a big
Colorado hit for Denver band the Astronauts, and in 1966 would appear on the
Monkees’ debut album. Sir Raleigh’s
version will peak here at number 36.
This is the week that Gene Pitney’s “Last Chance to Turn Around”
replaces its b-side “Save Your Love” on the survey.
“I Know a Place” by Petula Clark drops off the survey this
week, but will return next week, then vanish for good.
