Spirit--Mechanical World

The very heavy and seemingly not very AM radio friendly “Mechanical World” by Spirit was a number 123 Bubbling Under “hit” at Billboard; it’ll get to number 29 here and spend nine weeks on the survey.  All the other debuts were Hot 100 BB hits, including both versions of “Mr. Bojangles,” listed here as one entry.  Jerry Jeff Walker, the writer of the song, got to number 77 while Bobby Cole’s version got to number 79--here, the two versions will drop off next week, then come back for three weeks, peaking at number 26; then Jerry Jeff’s version will hang on by itself for three more weeks.  (The version most people remember, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, is from 1970.)

“Alice Long” by Boyce & Hart, a number 27 national hit, will spend two non-consecutive weeks at number one here, with two weeks at number two separating them.  Bobby Vinton’s “Halfway to Paradise” will do about halfway better here than in Billboard, number 11 versus number 23.  Pop vocal group the Love Generation’s “Montage From How Sweet It Is,” from the movie How Sweet It Is, was a number 86 BB hit that will get up to number 17 here.  And the Temptations’ “I Could Never Love Another” will come up short of its number 13 BB peak, stopping here at number 36.
