Barbara Acklin--Love Makes a Woman

Glen Campbell’s everyday housewife wakes up and goes away,
while Wayne Newton’s continues dreaming for four more weeks.
“Born to Be Wild,” which had seemed to be peaking after
being 14, 14 and 12 the last three weeks, suddenly shifts gears and jumps into
the number one position.
All the week’s debuts were Billboard Top Ten hits, with one
major exception. “I Just Can’t Help
Believin’,” as recorded by its co-author Barry Mann, did not make the Billboard
charts; here it will fall back one slot next week and then drop off the
survey. In the summer of 1970 we’ll see
the version most people remember, by B.J. Thomas.
Most of the other debuts will fail to match their national
peaks here; the exceptions are Canned Heat’s “On the Road Again” (16BB/9KJR) and
the 1910 Fruitgum Co.’s “1, 2, 3, Red Light,” a number five BB hit that will
quickly rise to number one here and spend two weeks in that position. The others: Deep Purple’s reworking of Joe
South’s “Hush” (4/10), Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66’s reworking of the
Beatles’ “The Fool on the Hill” (6/21), Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s “You’re
All I Need to Get By” (7/32), and Barbara Acklin’s “Love Makes a Woman”
(15/49).
