“Mr. Bojangles” returns after a one-week absence, “Light My
Fire” returns after a three-week absence, and Wayne Newton’s “Dreams of the
Everyday Housewife” returns after one week to join Glen Campbell’s version.
Last week the Monkees’ “D.W. Washburn” was at number six in
its seventh week on the survey. This
week the record is turned over, and it is replaced on the survey by its b-side
“It’s Nice to Be With You,” which will spend three weeks here and which was not
a Billboard hit.
We have seen Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” before—it was
on the survey from 2-23-68 through 3-29-68.
That time it peaked at number 13, while this time it’ll peak at number
18. It had two separate stretches on the
national charts as well, but there it got to number 36 the first time and
number five the second. I have no idea
what caused it to chart twice.
Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin’” only got to number 113 in
Billboard on its original 1968 release; here it will go to number 31. But we’ll see it here again in a year, due to
its being used in the movie Midnight Cowboy—the re-release was number six BB,
number 35 here.
Nancy Sinatra’s “Nice ‘n Easy” was a non-BB hit that will
repeat at number 39 here next week and then drop off. It was the b-side of “Happy,” which KJR did
not play.
The Dells’ “Stay in My Corner,” a remake of their own 1965
hit, was a number ten Billboard hit, but it will only make it to number 41
here.
That only leaves one debut unmentioned. “People Got to Be Free” by the Rascals spent
five weeks at number one in Billboard, but here it’ll only get to number
two. It’ll be frozen out of the number
one spot by a record that peaked at number five in Billboard, which will debut
in a couple of weeks.
