Band--The Weight

Last week “You’re All I Need to Get By” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell jumped 16 spots from number 48 to number 32.  This week it’s gone.

Just five debuts this week.  “Love Heals” by British band Colours only got to number 106 in Billboard but will make it to number 20 here.  Larry Marks’ folky-pop “L.A. Break Down” beats that—129 BB, number nine here.  “Fire” by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown spent one week at number two in Billboard, while here it’ll be number one for a week, followed by four straight weeks at number two.  The Vogues, settling into a role as an oldies group, will equal their BB peak of number seven with their version of “My Special Angel.”  And new band the Band will make it to number 28 here with the number 63 Billboard hit “The Weight.”

Moody Blues--Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)

An interesting week for debuts, including two non-Billboard.  “Where Are They Now” by little-known easy-listening singer Robin Wilson will be number 44 next week and then drop off.  I’m not sure if it charted anywhere else.  “Harper Valley PTA” was written by Tom T. Hall, and the Ricky Page version and the well-known Jeannie C. Riley version came out about the same time and sound pretty similar.  Jeannie’s version was a huge smash but was ignored at KJR, while Ricky’s version seems to have only been popular in the Pacific Northwest, including here, where it’ll go quickly to number three.

Wisconsin’s the Love Society’s mellow vocal group version of “Do You Wanna Dance” was a number 108 BB hit that will get to number 23 here, spending eight weeks on the survey.  Slightly punky bubblegum “You Got the Love” by Professor Morrison’s Lollipop (from Nebraska) was a number 88 hit in Billboard that will make it up to number eleven here, and spend eleven weeks on the survey.  The Association’s “Six Man Band” got to number 47 in Billboard and will reach number 22 here.  On the other hand, Aretha Franklin’s “The House That Jack Built” will only reach number 32 here, nowhere near its number six national peak.  Its b-side was also a big national hit, and we’ll be seeing it in a few weeks.
