Jay & the Americans--Sunday and Me

High debut for the Vogues; huge leap for Mitch Ryder.

For some unknown reason, or for no reason at all, “Sunday and Me” by Jay & the Americans returns to the survey, just for this week, after being off for the last three weeks.

All this week’s debuts were Top 40 Billboard hits except one.  British pop singer Ken Dodd’s “Tears (For Souvenirs)” was a number 107 BB hit that will spend five weeks here on the survey, though never getting higher than its initial number 35.  Dionne Warwick’s “Are You There (With Another Girl)” peaked at number 39 in Billboard and will make it to number 20 here; “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” by Stevie Wonder was a number 3 BB hit that will stall at number 26 here.  These three combine with “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach’s In)” to give us five parenthetical titles…

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass--Spanish Flea

A lot of shakeup due to the two-week gap between surveys.  Eleven debuts this week, and the Statler Brothers’ “Flowers on the Wall” drops off from all the way up at number six.

High debuts for two tracks from the Beatles’ Rubber Soul album, “Michelle” at number two and “Norwegian Wood” at number 19.  Neither, of course, made the Billboard charts, since they weren’t singles.  Also a non-BB debut is Mel Carter’s “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So,” the b-side of number 50 Billboard hit “Love is All We Need.”  “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” will peak here at number 24, and then KJR will turn the record over and start playing “Love is All We Need.”  Al Hirt’s “The Arena” Bubbled Under at number 129; it’ll get to number 17 at KJR.  Other significant disparities are the Supremes’ “My World is Empty Without You” (5BB/20KJR), “Andrea” by the Sunrays (41/21) and “Tijuana Taxi” by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (38/16).
