Four Seasons--Beggin'

“Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane” reverse their order in the Beatles’ entry.

B-side “No Milk Today” is dropped from the entry for “There’s a Kind of Hush.”

Only four debuts this week.  One is non-BB, Seattle’s Brave New World with the psychedelic “It’s Tomorrow,” which will peak at number 36.  “The Return of the Red Baron” by the Royal Guardsmen and “This is My Song” by Petula Clark were number 15 and number three Billboard hits, respectively; here they will almost switch places, peaking at number 4 and number 12.  (This leaves only the Four Seasons’ “Beggin’,” which will peak at number 16 here, exactly the same as in Billboard.)

Things get complicated this week with the Ventures and Davie Allan & the Arrows, so I’m going to take the time to try to explain it.  “The Wild Angels” was a biker movie starring Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra and Bruce Dern that came out in the summer of 1966.  “Theme From ‘The Wild Angels’” and “Blue’s Theme” were two different songs from the movie, performed by Davie Allan & the Arrows.  Both were eventually released as singles.  The Ventures recorded “Theme From ‘The Wild Angels’” and released it as a single, but as far as I know they never recorded or released a version of “Blue’s Theme.”  The Davie Allan version of “Theme From” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 12, 1966 and only reached number 99.  “Blue’s Theme” debuted there on April 22, 1967 and peaked at number 37.  The Ventures’ version of “Theme From” debuted on Billboard’s Bubbling Under chart on December 24, 1966 and peaked at number 110.  Straightforward so far, but KJR confused things by mixing the three recordings together on their survey.  Here’s how they were listed each week:

2/10/1967
