Jefferson Airplane--Bringing Me Down
|
Three big jumps into the top ten. The Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life”
drops all the way off from number 14.
Four non-BB debuts.
The b-side of Bobby Hebb’s “A Satisfied Mind,” “Love Love Love,” is
added to the former’s entry on the survey.
The theme song from the Monkees’ TV show, a cut on their debut album,
will rise quickly to number one, beating “Last Train to Clarksville,” which was
nationally number one but peaked here last week at number three. “Trip, Stumble & Fall” by the Mamas &
Papas is a track from their newly-released second album; it will only appear on
the survey this one week. And “Bringing
Me Down” by the new group Jefferson Airplane, who will hit it big in 1967, was
a single but didn’t chart in Billboard—it will peak here next week at number 48.
Among the other debuts, the Troggs’ “I Can’t Control Myself,”
only a number 43 Billboard hit, will rise to number seven here, in two
weeks. The Rolling Stones’ “Have You
Seen Your Mother Etc Etc Etc,” though debuting way up at number 20, will not
equal its number nine BB position, peaking next week at number 16 and then
spending only two more weeks on the survey.
Three consecutive songs deal with means of locomotion: “Bus
Stop,” “Walk Away Renee,” “Last Train to Clarksville.” “You Can’t Hurry Love” is immediately
followed by “I Can’t Control Myself”—sounds like an argument. And at the bottom, “Trip, Stumble & Fall”
seems appropriately situated between “Bringing Me Down” and “It Hurts Me.”
