Donovan jumps from 34 to five, while the Monkees debut at number 16 with another track from their first album—they weren’t releasing singles quickly enough for KJR.

One other of the week’s debuts did not make Billboard, and this one was released as a single—Jan & Dean’s version of Chuck Berry’s “School Days.”  It’ll peak next week at number 29.  Don Grady is best remembered for playing Robbie on My Three Sons, but he was also a musician, and his “The Children of St. Monica” has one of the biggest chart differentials we will encounter: it only got to number 132 in Billboard but will make it up to number three here.  We’ll see him again here on the survey in 1967 with the group the Yellow Balloon.

Folkie Seattle singer-songwriter Danny O’Keefe makes the survey, six years before his one national hit, with “That Old Sweet Song,” which will peak at number 48 next week.  The other debuts this week were all Hot 100 hits, though just barely in the case of “Help Me” by New Jersey soul group the Spellbinders—it peaked at number 100 in Billboard, while this week’s number 45 spot is the highest it will get here.

In early 1965 the Trade Winds made the survey with “New York’s a Lonely Town” (“…when you’re the only surfer boy around…”); in August 1966 they were back, keeping up with the times with “Mind Excursion.”  Now they’re back again, further updated with a new name, the Innocence, with “There’s Got to Be a Word!”  It was a number 34 hit in BB and will get up to number 13 here.  And Lou Rawls’ biggest hit of the 1960s, “Love is a Hurtin’ Thing,” which made it to number 13 in Billboard, will stop at number 28 here.
