“Crimson and Clover” and “Sweet Cream Ladies” make big
leaps; “Mendocino” drops out of the survey from number 19.
As mentioned last time, there are ten debuts this week. The majority of them will do noticeably
better here than nationally, including one non-BB hit, bubblegum obscurity “Hayride”
by the Saturday Morning Cartoon Show, which will rise to number 19. Also: Tiny Tim’s version of “Great Balls of
Fire” (85BB/23KJR), jazzy/psychedelic/Native American-esque/pop “Witchi Tai To”
by Everything is Everything (69/17), “Woman Helping Man” by the Vogues (47/13),
“Someday Soon” by Judy Collins (55/26), the First Edition’s “But You Know I
Love You” (their last record before Kenny Rogers started getting star
billing)(19/10), and “Nothing But a Heartache” by the Flirtations (34/8). Going in the opposite direction, “Everyday
People” by Sly & the Family Stone, number one for four weeks in Billboard,
will stop here at number eight, and, surprisingly, the number five BB hit “Indian
Giver” by the 1910 Fruitgum Co. will only make it to number 21, though it will
spend eleven weeks on the survey.
