Two songs
debut this week just as the other sides of their records drop off, but the
survey lists them as debuts rather than as continuations of the same listings,
which is how it had generally been done previously. Jan & Dean’s
“Popsicle,” the national hit side, replaces “Norwegian Wood,” and the Cascades’
“Truly Julie’s Blues” replaces “Cheryl’s Goin’ Home” (both sides written by Bob
“Elusive Butterfly” Lind). “Truly Julie’s Blues” will get no higher than
this week’s number 38, but it didn’t make Billboard at all. The only
other debut with a large discrepancy is the Lettermen’s version of “I Only Have
Eyes For You,” which was a number 72 BB hit and will get to number 31
here. It may also be worth mentioning that the Animals’ “Don’t Bring Me
Down” got to number 12 in Billboard and will reach number 3 here, so I have
mentioned it.
