Happenings--See You in September

A lot of shakeup in the top ten, with some records making big jumps to get there.

As mentioned a couple weeks back, “Younger Girl” by the Critters drops all the way off the survey from number 15.

One noteworthy non-BB debut this week: “Diddy Wah Diddy” by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band.  This was the closest thing to a hit single the Captain ever had, getting airplay in a handful of western cities.  It’ll peak at number 36 here.

Among the others are Herb Alpert’s “The Work Song” (18BB/31KJR), the Shangri-Las’ “Past, Present & Future” (59/32), and the Happenings’ “See You in September” (3/19).  Tommy Roe’s “Sweet Pea,” a number 8 BB hit, will rise quickly to number one here.

Wailers--It's You Alone

The Animals jump upward as the Mamas & Papas plunge downward.  Say goodbye to the Wailers as they hang on for one last week; this is their last appearance on the Fabulous 50.

“If You Gotta Go, Go Now” was Lyme & Cybelle’s follow-up to “Follow Me,” which debuted here on the 2-18-66 chart.  It will be almost as successful here as its predecessor, peaking at number 28, but it did not chart in Billboard.  The week’s other debuts were all Hot 100 hits.  Neil Diamond makes his first appearance here with “Solitary Man,” a number 55 BB hit, which will get up to number 20.  A couple will not do quite as well here as nationally: Sam & Dave’s “Hold On! I’m a Comin” (21BB/39KJR) and true one-hit wonder Tommy McLain’s version of “Sweet Dreams” (15/26).
