Kinks--Till the End of the Day

Big jumps by Frank Gallop and the Beach Boys.

One non-BB debut: “Don’t Ever Let Me Know” by the Bobby Fuller Four, which only appears on the survey this one week.  It was the b-side of their version of the Buddy Holly song “Love’s Made a Fool of You,” which will debut here in two weeks.

The other debuts were all Hot 100 hits, though none will show close correspondence between their positions on the two charts: Herman’s Hermits (9BB/3KJR)(okay, that’s reasonably close), Buddy Starcher (39/10), Ray Charles (19/40), the Bachelors (38/16), the Ramsey Lewis Trio (70/45), and the Kinks (50/19).  The Buddy Starcher (he was a country DJ/bandleader) record was a recitation of the eerie parallels between presidents Lincoln and Kennedy (Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy, Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln!  Lincoln and Kennedy both have seven letters!).

Johnny Rivers and Paul Revere & the Raiders jump into the top ten, the Ventures’ version of “Secret Agent Man” dropping from its entry on the way.  The “Batman” theme entry changes from being listed as Neal Hefti/The Marketts to “Marketts & others.”  And Herb Alpert’s “Spanish Flea” is now a two-sided hit, joined by “What Now My Love.”

“You Can’t Grow Peaches on a Cherry Tree” by the Browns, which got to number 42 here (and 120 in BB) the previous summer, is back, just two weeks after a new version (retitled “I Can’t Grow Peaches on a Cherry Tree”) by the group Just Us debuted on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Browns record will rise to number 33 here next week and then be replaced on the survey by the Just Us version.

Two non-BB debuts: Don Ho’s “Sweet Someone” and Trini Lopez’s “The 32nd of May,” which will peak next week at numbers 36 and 30 respectively.  The Trini Lopez song was the b-side of the number 39 BB hit “I’m Comin’ Home, Cindy.”  Between these two records and the Wayne Newton one that debuted last week, Seattle is showing itself to have a soft spot for lounge entertainers.

“The Ballad of Irving,” a comedy record by radio/TV announcer Frank Gallop, was a number 34 BB hit that will get to number 7 here.  “Sippin’ ‘n Chippin’” by the T-Bones, an instrumental taken from a Nabisco jingle and the follow-up to their big hit version of an Alka-Seltzer jingle, only got to number 62 in Billboard but will do better here and peak at number 26.  “Killer Joe” by the Kingsmen was a number 77 BB hit; it will make it to number 36 here.
