“I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” was written by Burt
Bacharach and Hal David for the 1968 stage musical Promises, Promises. Most of us know the big hit 1970 version by
Dionne Warwick, but it had been released as a single in 1969 by Johnny Mathis
(whose version reached number 35 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart) and by
Burt himself, an orchestral/choral version that got to number 18 on the Easy
Listening chart and number 93 on the Hot 100, and will get to number 32 here.
The week’s other debuts were all top 50 BB hits. “Abergavenny,” by British pop singer Marty
Wilde under the name Shannon, was a number 47 BB hit that will make it to
number 15 here. Stevie Wonder’s “My
Cherie Amour,” a number four national hit, will stop at number twelve. The others will do about as well here as in
Billboard.
