Bards--The Owl & the Pussycat
|
Two non-Billboard debuts this week. The first is “Mama McCluskie,” a melodramatic
pop-country record by Norro Wilson—it reminds me a little of Charlie Rich’s
1973 hit “The Most Beautiful Girl”…which Norro wrote. Norro hit the country chart several times
between 1969 and 1977, but was more successful as a songwriter. The second is Eastern Washington’s Bards with
Edward Lear’s “The Owl & the Pussycat.”
The Bards had recorded the song previously, in 1966; both versions were
kind of psychedelic, but the 1966 one was faster and punkier while this version
is slower and bluesier. Norro Wilson
will get up to number twelve on the survey, while the Bards will peak next week
at number 49.
Bluegrass pioneers Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs recorded
the instrumental “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” in 1949. In 1968 they re-recorded it for the movie
Bonnie & Clyde; the new version was released as “Theme From Bonnie &
Clyde” while the old version was re-released under the original title. Billboard listed the two versions as one
entry, under the “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” title, which reached number 55 on
the pop chart and number 58 on the country chart. KJR listed it as “Bonnie & Clyde Theme”
this first week and just “Bonnie & Clyde” thereafter; it’ll go all the way
to number six.
Neil Diamond’s original “Red Red Wine” was a number 62 BB
hit that will make it to number 22 here; it’s better known via its 1980s remake
by UB40. Dean Martin’s “You’ve Still Got
a Place in My Heart,” a number 60 Billboard hit, will peak here next week at
number 34.
