Scaffold--Thank U Very Much

All the week’s debuts will do better here than they did in Billboard, except for the Delfonics’ “La-La-Means I Love You” (4BB/17KJR).  Folksinger/songwriter Phil Ochs’ “Outside of a Small Circle of Friends” is an extreme example, as it will get up to number seven here but was only number 118 in Billboard.  The Parade was a studio-only group of Southern California songwriter-singers backed by studio musicians whom we saw here once before with “Sunshine Girl;” their “The Radio Song” was the second-biggest of their only two hits, making it to number 127 in BB while it’ll peak at number 32 here.  Joe South’s “Birds of a Feather” stopped at number 106 at Billboard but will go to number 37 here next week, then drop off; he put out a second version in 1969 which did slightly better at BB, number 96, but will not appear at KJR, though we’ll encounter the song again, by Paul Revere and the Raiders, when we get to 1971.

Speaking of the Raiders, their “Too Much Talk” is the only one of the debuts besides the Delfonics that was a sizeable Billboard hit; it was number 19 there and will reach number ten here.  Folk duo Jim & Jean, whom we saw here in March 1967 with “What’s That Got to Do With Me,” will get no higher than this week’s number 40 spot with “People World,” but it was only number 94 in Billboard.  The Will-O-Bees, a clean-cut male-male-female New York pop/folk vocal trio, had a number 95 national hit with ‘It’s Not Easy,” which will make it to number 44 here.  And “Thank U Very Much” by British band the Scaffold, featuring Paul McCartney’s brother, will best its number 69 BB peak by reaching number 29.
