Dionne and Paul charge into the top three. The survey is looking very 1968-ish as the
1967 influence fades.
The “Guitar Man” sheds his “High Heel Sneakers” for his
final week on the survey.
For the fourth straight week there are exactly six
debuts. One only Bubbled Under at Billboard,
Michigan’s Cherry Slush with their garage-rock-pop-psych-with-horns “I Cannot
Stop You”—number 119 in BB, it’ll inch up to number 37 here next week and then
drop off. “Playboy,” a pop-rock ballad
duet by Gene & Debbe, was a number 17 national hit but here it’ll get to
number four and spend 16 weeks on the survey.
The Four Tops will come up short again of their Billboard numbers with
their version of “Walk Away Renee”—number 14 BB, number 33 here.
