Out of sequence, but I found KJR’s Fabulous 50 For 1966.  The second column is the record’s peak position in the regular KJR survey, and the third column is the peak position at Billboard.

It’s hard to see what method they used.  The most surprising inclusion is “The Sounds of Silence,” which peaked at number nine in 1965 and was only on the survey for the first two weeks of 1966, when it was number 36 and number 45.  Similarly, “No Matter What Shape” peaked at number 12 at the end of 1965, remained on the survey for the first five weeks of 1966, and its highest position in those weeks was 15.  There are a few other records here that debuted at the end of 1965, but they all had most of their time on the survey, as well as their peak positions, in 1966.

The most surprising omissions are the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer,” which spent three weeks at number one, and their “Good Day Sunshine” and the Monkees’ “Theme From the Monkees,” which spent two weeks there each .  Also missing are number two hits “Hanky Panky” by Tommy James & the Shondells, “It’s You Alone” by the Wailers, “Little Girl” by the Syndicate of Sound, “Lady Jane” by the Rolling Stones, “Drive My Car” by the Beatles, “Open Up Your Door” by Richard & the Young Lions, “Psychotic Reaction” by the Count Five, “Here, There and Everywhere” by the Beatles and “Dandy” by Herman’s Hermits.

  1. I remember that I had asked you to post this if you found it. Thanks so much for posting it! I agree that whoever did this ranking was pretty careless to leave out "Paperback Writer."

  2. I put all your 1966 data into an Excel spreadsheet and did a ranking of my own, where I calculated the average position each song held, adjusted down for any song that was less than 14 weeks on the chart. The downward adjustments included all songs except "Kicks" and "California Dreamin'", which each charted for 14 weeks, and "Born Free," which charted for 16 weeks. My ranking was surprisingly close to what KJR did. It looks like KJR downgraded songs that were not on the chart for long. "Paperback Writer," for example, was number 1 for three weeks but was only on the charts for 9 weeks total. Therefore, I did a ranking that was just 30% weighted on the average chart position (adjusted downward for songs on the charts for less than 14 weeks) and the remaining 70% based on peak position on the chart. I got this top 50 ranking for the year 1966:

    1 Beach Boys--Good Vibrations
    2 Mamas & Papas--Monday, Monday
3 Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs--Lil' Red Riding Hood
    4 Lou Christie--Lightnin' Strikes
5 Nancy Sinatra--These Boots Are Made For Walkin'
6 SSgt Barry Sadler--The Ballad of the Green Berets
    7 Donovan--Mellow Yellow

    9 Tommy Roe--Hooray For Hazel
    10 Association--Cherish
    11 Lovin' Spoonful--Daydream
12 Lovin' Spoonful--Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?
    13 New Vaudeville Band--Winchester Cathedral
    14 Paul Revere & the Raiders--Kicks
    15 Beatles/David & Jonathan--Michelle
    16 Troggs--Wild Thing

    47 Percy Sledge--When a Man Loves a Woman
    48 Donovan--Sunshine Superman

    50 Sandy Posey--Born a Woman

This ranking does better justice, I think, to the number 1 and number 2 songs that were omitted from KJR's survey.

  3. The biggest omission was "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" on either the KJR year end charts for 1966 or 1967.

How about posting the year end rankings for 64, 65, 67, 69 and so on? They
    were published in the paper.

    1. 1968 is the earliest one that I have. When Eugene asked about 1966, I was able to find it online. I don't think I ever looked for 64, 65 and 67, but I will, and if I find any of them I'll post them. Thanks for the suggestion.

    2. I think I will calculate the year-end rankings for 65 and 67. I've got an Excel spreadsheet that does these calculations. I calculated year-end rankings for 1969 just to see how close it comes to KJR's year-end ranking.
