The second column is the peak position on the Fabulous Fifty, and the third column is peak position at Billboard.

Overall this looks like a reasonable chart.  The number ones are mostly at the top, followed by a lot of twos, threes and fours, with a few fives, sixes and eights toward the bottom.

In my post of the 1968 year-end survey, I said “the only records that reached the top two during the year that are not listed here are the ones that were in the top three positions on the final survey of the year: Dusty Springfield’s ‘Son-of-a Preacher Man,’ Leapy Lee’s ‘Little Arrows,’ and Bobby Vinton’s ‘I Love How You Love Me.’”  Interestingly, none of those three appear in this one either; I guess having their chart runs split between two years kept them from making the final list for either.  The only other records that reached the top two during 1969 that do not appear here are “Touch Me” by the Doors and “Rainbow Ride” by Andy Kim, both of which debuted in December 1968 and peaked at number two in early 1969.  It seems like “Touch Me,” at least, should be here, but “Rainbow Ride” sank fast after its one week at number two.

  1. Here's a purely statistical ranking of 1969's KJR Fab 50 songs, with a full weight given to peak position, a three-quarter weight given to number of weeks on the chart, and a 50% weight given to average position.

    First number: statistical ranking
    Second number: KJR ranking
Third number: peak position and (weeks at peak position)

  2. Songs on the statistical ranking not on the KJR ranking:
    31 4 (2) 13 New Colony Six--Things I'd Like to Say
    33 2 (1) 11 Doors--Touch Me
    34 5 (1) 15 Jackie DeShannon--Put a Little Love in Your Heart
    40 5 (1) 13 Paul Revere & the Raiders--Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon
    44 3 (1) 12 Smith--Baby It's You
    46 5 (1) 16 Mama Cass--It's Getting Better

Songs on the KJR ranking not on the statistical ranking:
    35 4 (1) 10 Oliver--Good Morning Starshine
    44 2 (3) 8 Led Zeppelin--Whole Lotta Love
    46 4 (1) 10 Creedence Clearwater Revival--Down on the Corner
    48 5 (1) 12 Booker T. & the MG's--Time is Tight
    49 8 (1) 12 Bards--Tunesmith
    50 8 (1) 8 Sly & the Family Stone--Everyday People

The KJR ranking omitted songs with higher peak positions or were on the charts longer than some of the songs on the KJR ranking. However, those songs seem to have had more staying power over the years (with "Down on the Corner" and "Everyday People" as good examples. Maybe KJR sensed that these songs were underrated on the weekly surveys.

    1. Thanks for the analysis, Gene. Looks like the New Colony Six got shafted, but overall, as I said above, it seems like a reasonable chart. I wonder exactly how KJR went about compiling it.
