“Fortunate Son” drops off the Creedence listing for this one week only.

Two of the debuts only Bubbled Under at Billboard.  Pop-rock singer Pat Shannon’s “Back to Dreamin’ Again” will be number 48 again next week, then drop off the survey; it stopped at number 103 in Billboard (it was a big hit in San Bernardino).  Pop-rock band California Earthquake’s “What a Beautiful Feeling” will rise to number 45 next week, then drop off; it only made it to number 133 nationally (it was a big hit in Birmingham).

Two of the other debuts were huge soul hits which will be a little less huge here.  Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You”/”Star” was a number one BB hit that we will see stop at number eleven, while Eddie Holman’s “Hey There Lonely Girl,” number two nationally, will peak at number ten.

It’s the 1970s!

Since the “Last Week” column is actually two weeks ago, there’s a bit more shakeup than usual, but nothing too dramatic.

As I mentioned a couple weeks back, “Loved One,” the non-Billboard b-side of Tommy James’ “She,” becomes the a-side on the survey this week and will remain there the rest of the way, peaking at number eight.

One of this week’s debuts will do pretty dramatically better at KJR than nationally: “Jennifer Tomkins” by bubblegum studio group Street People, a number 36 BB hit, will spend four weeks at number one and 16 weeks on the survey.  Next-best in this regard is Johnny Nash’s reggae version of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid,” a number 39 BB hit that will get to number six.  Also worth mentioning is San Francisco soul-rock band Cold Blood’s “You Got Me Hummin,” number 52 in Billboard, peaking at number 30 here.
