Grass Roots--Heaven Knows

I can’t think of much to say about this one.  We’ve got the Supremes’ last release before Diana Ross went solo, which is another sign of the sixties coming to a close; it was number one nationally but will stop at number eight here.  The Grass Roots’ “Heaven Knows” was number 24 in Billboard but will get up to number twelve here.  The other debuts are Mark Lindsay’s “Arizona” (10BB/7KJR), Dusty Springfield’s “A Brand New Me,” her final appearance on the Fabulous 50 (24/39), and Joe Walsh’s James Gang’s “Funk #49” (59/38).

There are three Tommys between number 31 and number 38.

  1. I know the P-I published a Fabulous 50 for the year 1969. I remember being overjoyed when my absolute favorite song of 1969 (and perhaps all time) made it to Number 1: the Rolling Stones' Honky Tonk Women. I've been compiling how songs have done in 1969 on the Fab 50 surveys that you have published so far. I have ranked them according to number of weeks on the chart, peak position, and average position. I made an average ranking based on full weights to weeks on the chart and peak position and a three-quarter weight to average position. The three-quarter weight disadvantages songs like Zager and Evans' In the Year 2525, which were wildly popular for a short while (hence a high average position) but which lost favor quickly and dropped off the survey from high rankings (hence a shorter time on the chart). The rankings for the year 1969, based on surveys through November 14, are as follows:

Rolling Stones--Honky Tonk Women
Archies--Sugar, Sugar
Beatles--Get Back
Cowsills--Hair
Tommy Roe--Dizzy
Bobby Sherman--Little Woman
Tommy James & the Shondells--Crimson and Clover
Elvis Presley--In the Ghetto
5th Dimension--Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In
Three Dog Night--One
Zager & Evans--In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)
Tommy James & the Shondells--Sweet Cherry Wine
Foundations--Build Me Up Buttercup
Zombies--Time of the Season
Oliver--Jean
Perry Como--Seattle
Creedence Clearwater Revival--Bad Moon Rising
Buchanan Brothers--Medicine Man
Three Dog Night--Easy to Be Hard
Paul Revere & the Raiders--Let Me
Box Tops--Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March
Marvin Gaye--I Heard it Through the Grapevine
Tom Jones--I'll Never Fall in Love Again
Neil Diamond--Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show
Mercy--Love (Can Make You Happy)
New Colony Six--Things I'd Like to Say
Jackie DeShannon--Put a Little Love in Your Heart
Tommy Roe--Jack and Jill
Doors--Touch Me
Henry Mancini & His Orchestra--Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet
Tommy James & the Shondells--Crystal Blue Persuasion
Andy Kim--Baby, I Love You
Clique--Sugar on Sunday
Paul Revere & the Raiders--Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon
Creedence Clearwater Revival--Proud Mary
Creedence Clearwater Revival--Green River
Johnny Cash--A Boy Named Sue
Smith--Baby It's You
Elvis Presley--Suspicious Minds
Mama Cass--It's Getting Better
Desmond Dekker & the Aces--Israelites
Billy Joe Royal--Cherry Hill Park
Neil Diamond--Sweet Caroline
Donovan--Atlantis
Booker T. & the MG's--Time is Tight
Kenny Rogers & the First Edition--Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town
Crow--Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me
Oliver--Good Morning Starshine
Ray Stevens--Gitarzan
Steppenwolf--Rock Me

I imaging that Something/Come Together and Leaving on a Jet Plane will show prominently in the Fab 50 for 1969 after the surveys for December and the second half of November are included.

Thanks again for publishing these surveys! KJR was such a big part of my childhood and adolescence that seeing these surveys brings back wonderful memories.

    1. Hi again Gene! You're welcome, and thank you very much for your interest and contributions. I do have the 1969 year-end survey, so that will be posted when it's time. I haven't compared it to your list...
