Mel & Tim--Backfield in Motion
|
“Holly Holy” suddenly shoots upward, from number 21 to
number six.
The “suddenly overstaying its welcome” award goes to Oliver’s
“Jean,” which drops off the survey from number 17.
The two sides of the new Elvis Presley single will be listed
jointly for their entire survey run here, as they were in Billboard; the
difference is that “Don’t Cry Daddy” was listed as the a-side in BB (where it
peaked at number six) while “Rubberneckin’” was the a-side as far as KJR was
concerned (and we’ll see it peak at number five).
“Little Black Egg” by the Nightcrawlers has an interesting
chart history. It was originally
released in 1965, and was popular at some radio stations in late ‘65/early ’66,
mostly in the band’s native Florida. It
appeared on Billboard’s Bubbling Under chart at number 135 for one week in December. In late 1966 it enjoyed a comeback, making it
big in various areas, notably in Ohio; it got to number six here at KJR and to
number 85 in Billboard. Now here we are
in 1969 and it’s back—it’ll peak at number 18 here, but this time it’s getting
no Billboard action and the only other stations playing it, that I’m aware of,
are also in Washington. I have no idea
what prompted this little comeback.
Debuts also worthy of note: early reggae star Jimmy Cliff’s “Wonderful
World, Beautiful People” (25BB/10KJR) and soul duo Mel & Tim’s “Backfield
in Motion” (almost the reverse, 10BB/26KJR).
