Sugar & Spice--The Cruel War

Another week where the survey was missing from the
microfilmed version of the newspaper.
All of this week’s positions come from the “last week” column of the
March 14 survey, so we’re missing the songs that are in their final week this
week.
“Galveston” makes a significant jump.
One of the debuts did not make Billboard: “The Cruel War,” a
cover of a Peter, Paul & Mary song, by Sugar & Spice, a band from
Winnipeg with female vocalists. It was a
big hit in their home town, and did well in some other Canadian cities; here it’ll
get to number 45.
Rhinoceros was a Los Angeles band that included former
members of Iron Butterfly, the Electric Flag, the Daily Flash and the Mothers
of Invention. Their “Apricot Brandy” was
a rocking instrumental that peaked nationally at number 46, but here it’ll just
miss the top ten, spending two weeks at number eleven. Speaking of Iron Butterfly, their follow-up
to “In-a-Gadda-da-Vida,” “Soul Experience,” will make it to number eight here,
despite being only a number 75 national hit.
And conversely, “My Whole World Ended” by newly-solo former Temptation
David Ruffin, a number nine BB hit, will only get to number 41.
