Out of sequence, but I found KJR’s Fabulous 50 For
1966. The second column is the record’s
peak position in the regular KJR survey, and the third column is the peak
position at Billboard.
It’s hard to see what method they used. The most surprising inclusion is “The Sounds
of Silence,” which peaked at number nine in 1965 and was only on the survey for
the first two weeks of 1966, when it was number 36 and number 45. Similarly, “No Matter What Shape” peaked at
number 12 at the end of 1965, remained on the survey for the first five weeks
of 1966, and its highest position in those weeks was 15. There are a few other records here that
debuted at the end of 1965, but they all had most of their time on the survey,
as well as their peak positions, in 1966.
The most surprising omissions are the Beatles’ “Paperback
Writer,” which spent three weeks at number one, and their “Good Day Sunshine”
and the Monkees’ “Theme From the Monkees,” which spent two weeks there each . Also missing are number two hits “Hanky Panky”
by Tommy James & the Shondells, “It’s You Alone” by the Wailers, “Little
Girl” by the Syndicate of Sound, “Lady Jane” by the Rolling Stones, “Drive My
Car” by the Beatles, “Open Up Your Door” by Richard & the Young Lions, “Psychotic
Reaction” by the Count Five, “Here, There and Everywhere” by the Beatles and “Dandy”
by Herman’s Hermits.
