All the week’s debuts were Hot 100 hits, and all will do better here than nationally, though some just barely.  “Dear Delilah,” by Grapefruit, a British pop-psych group with links to the Beatles, was a number 98 BB hit that will make number 42 here.  Vancouver BC’s Tom Northcott, whom we saw six months ago, is back with the Harry Nilsson song “1941,” a number 88 Billboard hit that’ll go to number 46 here next week and then drop off.  The Bee Gees’ “Words” was number 15 in Billboard but will get up to number three here, after a very slow climb.

Paul Mauriat’s “Love is Blue” drops off after spending five weeks on the survey with a peak of number 34.  After another week off it’ll come back and race to number one.

All six of the debuts were Hot 100 hits; actually all of them made the top 51.  “Some Velvet Morning” by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood was probably the strangest number 26 hit in Billboard history; here it’s the strangest number seven hit in history.  Neil Diamond’s version of “New Orleans” (why did Neil Diamond even record cover songs—didn’t he have enough originals?) was a number 51 BB hit that’ll get up to number 17.  And “I Can Take or Leave Your Loving” is the last time Herman’s Hermits will get as high as number 21 in Billboard and number 10 here.
