The Beach Boys jump from 37 to 8, but that’s nothing compared to the Beatles, debuting at number one with “Yellow Submarine.”  The other side of the record, “Eleanor Rigby,” debuts down at number 50, but it will quickly overtake “Yellow Submarine” and remain on the survey four weeks longer.

Two of the week’s debuts were not Billboard hits.  “I’m Normal” by The Emperor was an imitation of “They’re Coming to Take Me Away” and will peak at number 13 next week.  “Makin’ My Mind Up” by the Turtles was a single released to radio stations in selected markets and then withdrawn; the song later appeared on their Happy Together LP in a version with overdubbed horns which were not on the single version.  I have never heard the single version, which will peak at number five here.  I do not know why it was pulled.

“Land of 1000 Dances” by Wilson Pickett, a number six Billboard hit, will only make it to number 28 here.

Strangely, last week’s number five record, “Hungry” by Paul Revere & the Raiders, falls completely off the survey this week, and will not return.

“Sunshine Superman” leaps from 27 to 7 with a single bound.

The Rolling Stones debut up at number 23 with “Under My Thumb,” an album track that was not released as a single.  It’ll get to number three here.  One other debut did not make Billboard, “You’ve Got Your Head On Backwards” by the Sonics, which will make it to number ten.  “Gloria’s Dream” by the Belfast Gipsies, an offshoot of Them, only made it to number 124 in Billboard but will peak at number nine here.  David Houston’s “Almost Persuaded,” a number one country hit that also got to number 24 on the Billboard pop chart, will only get to number 47 next week and then drop off the survey.
