Discoveries: Animals—House of the Rising Sun; Fleetwoods--Mr. Sandman

Prolific songwriter/producers P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, as the Fantastic Baggys, arrive a bit late for the surfing fad with “Tell ‘Em I’m Surfin’,” which goes no higher than its number 43 this week—but did not show up in Billboard at all.  The Fleetwoods' remake of "Mr. Sandman," one of the Discoveries, made BB at number 113, will peak here at KJR at number 17, and is their final appearance in either list.

Elvis makes a big jump from 44 to 10 with “Such a Night,” originally on a 1960 LP but just now released as a single.

My notes don’t show a Discovery for this week.

Big moves by Dusty, the Beatles and Dean to sweep into the top three spots.  The Beatles also debut at number 12 with “If I Fell,” which was actually the b-side of “And I Love Her.”  Nationally, “And I Love Her” peaked at number 12 and “If I Fell” at number 53, while here at KJR “If I Fell” will reach number one in two weeks and “And I Love Her” won’t even appear on the chart until the week after that, peaking at number 3.

All the week’s debuts made the Billboard Hot 100, but it’s worth mentioning that “Ringo’s Theme” by the George Martin Orchestra, which is an instrumental version of “This Boy” that appeared in the movie A Hard Day’s Night, will hit number 13 at KJR versus 53 at Billboard, and “You’re No Good” by the also-British Swingin’ Blue Jeans will get to number 27 at KJR versus 97 at Billboard.
