“Hey Jude” holds off “Magic Carpet Ride” for the second consecutive week, but Steppenwolf will break through next week, ending the Beatles’ run at number one at eight weeks.

One non-BB hit debuts this week: Seattle’s Springfield Rifle with “That’s All I Really Need,” a mellow track with prominent flute by the group’s sax player, Jeff Afdem.  It’ll get up to number twelve on the survey.  “I’m a Fool” by San Francisco’s Peanut Butter Conspiracy was a number 125 hit in Billboard; it’ll make it to number 15 here.

The other debuts were all top 40 national hits, but one will do quite a bit better here—Deep Purple’s reworking of Neil Diamond’s “Kentucky Woman” will go all the way to number three here, but was only number 38 in Billboard.

Dion makes a big leap.

“Fire” by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown drops completely off the survey, after being number 22 last week, eleven the week before, and two the week before that.

Denver’s Rainy Daze return to the Fab 50 (remember “That Acapulco Gold” from early ’67?) with the hard-driving “Make Me Laugh,” which will stop at number 46 next week but did not make Billboard at all.  Ray Stevens continues his social commentary phase with “The Great Escape,” a number 114 Bubbling Under BB hit that will get to number 32 here.  “California Earthquake” by Mama Cass was a number 67 BB hit and will make it to number 37 here.  Leapy Lee was a British pop singer whose memorable “Little Arrows” got to number 16 in Billboard, and number eleven on their country chart; here it’ll go to number two, and it’s possible that the lack of a chart for December 27 and January 3 is what will keep it from number one.
