Terry Black & Laurel Ward--Goin' Down (On the Road to L.A.)

LA pop group Buckwheat’s version of Bobby Darin composition “Simple Song of Freedom” is the third version we’ve seen on the survey (Tim Hardin 1969, Spirit of Us 1970). It only made number 84 in Billboard and will inch up to number 41 here next week. David Bowie makes his first appearance on our survey and on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Changes,” which will get up to number eleven here versus only number 66 nationally. Canadian married couple Terry Black and Laurel Ward had a number 57 BB hit with “Goin’ Down (On the Road to L.A.),” which will make it to number 25 here.

That leaves two more debuts, “Jungle Fever,” a Belgian funk record by studio group the Chakachas (8BB/9KJR), and the Temptations’ “Take a Look Around” (30/21).

Beverly Bremers--Don't Say You Don't Remember

One non-Billboard debut this week: “My Impersonal Life” by Blue Rose, a song that would soon be covered as an LP track by Three Dog Night. It’ll creep to number 41 next week, then drop off. One other will just barely be a Hot 100 hit, singer-songwriter Scott English’s “Brandy,” which Barry Manilow later changed into “Mandy;” a number 91 national hit, it will get to number 22 here.  German Mike Kennedy had been the lead singer of Los Bravos, and his “Louisianna” was a number 62 BB hit that we’ll see go to number 14. “Mr. Penguin” by Lunar Funk sounds kind of what you’d expect it to, and it will get to number 35 versus its number 63 national peak. Sammy Davis Jr.’s “The Candy Man” was number one in Billboard for three weeks, but here it’ll stop at number nine, though it will spend 14 weeks on the survey. And since I’ve mentioned all the other debuts I might as well mention Donny Osmond’s version of Paul Anka’s “Puppy Love,” number three in BB, number one for two weeks here at KJR.

It seems to me that if you heard the top five songs here on the radio consecutively it would be kind of jarring.
