Another week where either the survey did not appear in the
newspaper or the page did not get microfilmed, so it is reconstructed as much
as possible from the following week’s “last week” column.
“Indian Reservation” makes a sizeable jump.
Yvonne Elliman’s version of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”
joins Helen Reddy’s as a single entry; they will be listed together for the
rest of their time on the survey and will peak at number eight. Nationally,
Helen’s version got to number 13 and Yvonne’s to 28.
Including Yvonne Elliman, we have nine debuts. The Rolling
Stones’ “Brown Sugar,” number one for two weeks in Billboard, will stop at
number eight here, which means it will be beaten by Bobby Sherman’s “The Drum,”
which will get to number four despite being only a number 29 national hit. “Brownsville”
by the Joy of Cooking, “Gotta See Jane” by R. Dean Taylor, and “Try Some, Buy
Some” by Ronnie Spector will peak at number 39, 40 and 41 respectively;
unimpressive, but better than their BB showings (66, 67, 77).
The Ronnie Spector song was written by George Harrison, as
was Ringo Starr’s “It Don’t Come Easy,” also debuting this week; John Lennon is
also among the debuts, but I am not aware of any Paul McCartney involvement
with any of the others.
